I moved to Baltimore from Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1 year ago. I’d been heavy into thrifting and reselling on eBay and was so excited to check out the secondhand clothing scene of a new, bigger city. The first thing I noticed was actual high-end consignments shops—the likes of which I’ve only seen whilst visiting larger cities, like Toronto and Miami, where I’ve found some of my favorite pieces. Secondly, there is a strong vintage scene here: clothes, furniture, memorabilia. In Baltimore, like many other places, sustainable fashion is slowly finding its foothold, with local shops carrying more sustainable clothing lines, and neighborhood festivals and craft fairs boasting loads of handmade clothing and goods.

Baltimore is a scrappy city, striving to build meaningful community through any means possible. This holds true in the vintage and sustainable clothing scene. Many of the store owners are collaborating to bring more awareness and momentum to this previously underground world of fashion through city thrift shopping tours, vintage pop-up shops, and expos.

Baltimore is nicknamed Charm City, stop into these thrift stores in Baltimore and you’ll see what makes our city so charming 🙂

1. Hunting Ground

If there is an award for “store I just want to hang out in”—Hunting Ground would win it. Set in an old stone church, Hunting Ground is everything you could wish for in a small designer and vintage clothing store. The clothing, accessories, and jewelry displays help you quickly imagine how you could style vintage and contemporary pieces flawlessly and evoke a lifestyle with your look. Yes, this the kind of store that makes you feel like a piece of clothing might change your life.

You can snag a lot of your 90s vintage here: mini backpacks, Levi’s cut-offs, cotton floral dresses, and slip dresses along with other vintage apparel organized by era.

They also carry sustainable brands such as Paloma Wool, North of West, Loup, PO-EM, and Swedish Stockings. When I visited last, they’d just gotten in beautiful high-waisted underwear handmade from all-natural materials and all-natural dyes (e.g., marigold petals) from the local brand Flowy. It’s one of my favorite thrift stores in Baltimore.

2. Illicit Rag Vintage

Their tagline joyfully reads, “Unique vintage clothing 4 the discriminate individual who loves & embraces fashion & it’s history!”

The owner of Illicit Rag Vintage enthusiastically tells customers to come out of the dressing room so she can see her curated pieces in action and help style them. While I was there, she simultaneously helped no fewer than 5 people find what they were looking for. Here you can find lots of bold print pants, skirts, kimonos, in-house distressed denim, and tons of leopard print, one of my personal favorites. The store is colorful and energetic, but the inventory doesn’t overwhelm you like many vintage stores can. You can tell each item has been carefully chosen for its character and potential to inspire an outfit.

Pro-tip: After stopping here, continue down the road to Plant Bar at Belvedere Square for the best tasting AND healthy-ish smoothie in town. I recommend Mango Creamsicle.

3. Bottle of Bread

Bottle of Bread has long been my favorite vintage shop, even before I moved to Baltimore. I learned about the shop through my sister, a longtime Baltimore resident. In the times I visited in the past, I left with a pink kilim rug, the coziest red screen print crewneck sweatshirt, and the desire to do much more vintage shopping. Their store is filled with plants and vintage décor styled around the clothing and always gives me dreamy west coast vibes.

For spring they featured a beautiful collection of cream-colored linen pieces, tons of vintage t-shirts, chunky sandals, and a case full of turquoise and sterling silver rings and bangles.

They also know their stuff. I tried on a pair of belted khaki shorts while there, and the owner informed me they were 1950s military-issued swim trunks that just so happen to fit like modern high-waisted hot pants.

Pro-tip: Another great shop, Keepers Vintage is directly across the street.

4. Redeux

ReDeux is expertly organized and provides a refreshing secondhand shopping experience where you wonder if you’re actually in a consignment shop because everything feels like new. My visits are always punctuated by the excitement of scoring fine pieces at affordable prices.

My favorite thing to shop for here is the shoes. They always have an extensive collection of shoes that are on trend: espadrilles, platform sandals, slip-on sneakers, etc. Brands I find here often include: Theory, Rag & Bone, Diane VonFurstenberg, Tucker, Rebecca Taylor, MaxMara, and Veronica Beard. Not to mention some of those highly coveted items like Hermes scarves and the double G Gucci belts.

There is also an entire rack of Eileen Fisher for your leisure and a really solid collection of work-out clothes. You must check out this best of the thrift stores in Baltimore.

5. Love Me Two Times

Whenever I walk into Love Me Two Times I think of the eclectic chaos of Carrie Bradshaw’s closet in Sex and the City. The racks are bursting with designer items screaming something special is waiting for you in here, find me! It’s the perfect place to find a dress to wear to a wedding, and an entire rack is dedicated to what I would call flowy vacation wear. Think of off-the-shoulder tops, sheer cover ups, smocks, linen tops, and flouncy sleeves. The prices are very good, and the owner is often running additional discounts to make room for the new stuff that’s constantly flowing in.

They always have purses to die for: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes and Gucci, in addition to piles of designer jeans.
