I love spending a morning looking at my clothes and asking if they spark joy. I did read The Art of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo and did the KonMari method. However, I still didn’t learn what’s a capsule wardrobe. There are other great reads that answer what’s a capsule wardrobe and can give you more steps to create a conscious, curated wardrobe with clothes you actually wear and love. You’ll also learn you can buy less while discovering your true style. And the planet and your wallet will thank you.
You can also check out my go-to books to learn about sustainable fashion and the fashion industry—environmental issues, human issues, and overall waste problems. There is hope too. The authors and experts provide recommendations on how governments, corporations, and how we as citizens and conscious consumers can create change. But first, let’s answer what’s a capsule wardrobe with the books below.

The Top 4 Books to Answer “What’s a Capsule Wardrobe? And How to Best Curate Your Closet and Find Your Style
The Conscious Closet
Year: 2019
Her first book revealed fast fashion’s hidden toll on garment workers, the environment, and even our own satisfaction with our clothes. The Conscious Closet shows what we can do about it and better understand what’s a capsule wardrobe. Cline helps show how you can build a wardrobe you love with greater intention and awareness of our clothes. Examples include how to pare down your closet; swap, resell, or recycle what you don’t love; better care for and repair what you do; and how to affordably buy, thrift, or rent an ethical wardrobe.
The Curated Closet
Year: 2016
Is your closet jam-packed and yet you have nothing to wear (yup!)? Can you describe your personal style in one sentence (I wish…)? If someone grabbed a random piece from your closet right now, how likely is it that it would be something you wear regularly?
With so many style and shopping options, it can be difficult to create a streamlined closet of pieces. In The Curated Closet, style writer Anuschka Rees presents a strategic approach to identifying, refining, and expressing personal style and building the ideal wardrobe to match it, with style and shopping strategies that women can use every day. She also answers what’s a capsule wardrobe. The book includes useful infographics, charts, and activities. You can also buy the workbook to help you along in the more curated closet journey.
Year: 2020
Project 333 shows how you can survive (and thrive!) with just 33 items in your closet for 3 months. The author, minimalist expert and author of Soulful Simplicity, guides you through your closet item-by-item, sifting through all the emotional baggage associated with those oh-so strappy high-heel sandals that cost a fortune but destroy your feet every time you walk more than a few steps to that extensive collection of never-worn little black dresses, to locate the items that actually look and feel like you.
She writes once we finally release ourselves from the cyclical nature of consumerism and focus less on our shoes and more on our self-care, we not only look great we feel great—and we can see a clear path to make other important changes in our lives that reach far beyond our closets.
